Let’s talk about the different countries. I live in the Netherlands. It’s a very small country. What do you know of the Netherlands?  I really like to learn a lot of you and your country!

Hello, it’s me. My name is Thomas. I’m currently 14 years old.

I’m from The Netherlands, a country in Northern-Europe, and is located next to Germany and Belgium. The Netherlands is as flat as a pancake (like the Dutch say). It’s really rare to find any hills in The Netherlands and only in the southern province Limburg do we have some hills. Our climate is really typical for Northern countries: cold winters and our summers are most of the times not to warm (about 20 – 25 degrees). I live currently in Didam, a village close to the German border. It’s a small village with about 17.000 people living in it. Around the village have we a lot of farms with grassfields. I go to Liemers college and is located also in Didam. We have 14 subjects at school. My favourite subject is Biology and history. I really dislike math and Dutch. My favourite sport is cycling. I really love it! The netherlands is ideal for people that like to ride no hills.

Ewa my name is Tjerk van Groningen but you can call me Berkie, I’m 15 years old.

I live in Didam, a little town in the Netherlands. My hobbies are football, relaxing, gaming. My high school is Liemers College, I’m on 3rd grade of the Gymnasium.

The Netherlands is a very small country and probably you don’t know a lot about it, so I’m going to tell you something about it.

The Netherlands is known for Wooden shoes, windmills and cheese, but also about the Netherlands football team of 1988.

The Netherlands is very flat, we have litterly got no mountains. In the Netherlands water is very important, we have developed a way to control the water.

This was my little story of Holland.

Goodbye

Amsterdam is a beautiful place that is famous about its canals. You would say it is the Venice of Holland. The strange thing about the Netherlands is that the government isn’t stationed in our capital city. Now you know a lot more about me and Holland.

Hello students / teachers from across the world

My name is Niels I am 14 years old and I live in the Netherlands. I am a student from a school in the village Didam called Liemers College But first I will start with the country The Netherlands ( Holland). Holland is a pretty small country in West of Europe, the land itself is full of water and we have used the water for our profit for ages already. We are known for having the tallest people in the world and we are the reason alot of doors across the world are 2 meter ( 6.5 feet) tall. Our school is a smaller school but we co-operate with other schools in our region.Together the schools work in a system called Quadraam. So they share their knowledge with each other.

My name is Lars and I am 14 years old. I live in Didam, a little town in the Netherlands. My hobby is football. I play footbal at DVC, a local footballclub. I also like to play at the playstation. My favorite games are Fifa and GTA. My school is called Liemers College. The Liemers College is in Didam and Zevenaar. Zevenaar is a town near by Didam. I am in the third of gymnasium.  I cycle to school, because my school is close to my home. I got a sister called Mirthe, She is twelve years old. I like to go on holiday to Italy. Next year I am going to the Liemers College in Zevenaar.

Hi! I’m Lieke van Bindsbergen, I’m fourteen years old and I live in the Netherlands. I’m going to high school Liemers College Didam. The name of my class is V3A.  I’ve got one litte brother and one little sister. I live in a little village named Nieuw-Dijk. I live close to school and it takes about ten minutes to go there by bike. I play football at footballclub Spinkhanen (grashoppers). The Netherlands is a small county in Europe, the capital of the Netherlands is Amsterdam and typical Dutch products are windmills, tulips and ‘stroopwafels’. This was a little story about me and Holland, I hope that you like it.

Hello, my name is Quinty. I’m 15 years old. I live in the Netherlands. Holland is a very small country, so we can drive from east to west in 2 hours. Amsterdam is our capital but I live in Didam. It’s close to the border of Germany. Didam is also a small village and we have 1 high school. I’m on that school, that’s called Liemers College. I’m in the 9th grade but we count different than other countries and that’s why I’m actually in the 3rd grade. I like the subjects Biology and chemistry. Typical things from the Netherlands are windmills, peanut butter, liquorice and wooden shoes.

Hello, I’m Noortje and I am 14 years old. I have one brother named Senne and he is 16 years old. I live (with my parents, brother and dog (spaikey)) in Didam (a village in the Netherlands). Didam isn’t very big and every Didammer knows almost everyone who live in Didam. My hobbies are playing football and playing guitar. I play guitar on Monday, I practice football on Tuesday and Thursday and I have a match on Saturday. I’m going to high school the Liemerscollege Didam. I’m in third class of VWO (pre-university secondary education). I like to play soccer and guitar but that makes my week very busy.

Hello! I’m Merel, 15 years old and I live in Holland. Holland is a country in Europe with a population of 17 million people. I actually live in Didam, it’s a village close to the border of Germany. Holland is a very small country and it mostly rains here. We don’t have really nice weather. Our school is also very small. The official language from the Netherlands is Dutch, but we also know English and we also learn French and German on schools. Dutch is also spoken in Belgium, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Sint-Maarten and Suriname. Typical dutch things are cheese, the tulips, herring, windmills that are turning, clogs and cycling on bikes.

Hello people, my name is Max. I'm fourteen years old. I live in Didam, the Netherlands. So…you want to know what's typically Dutch. You think about old cheese and flowers, don't you? But that isn't everything, that's only a part of it. I can talk about it all day, but that isn't really the point, I think that we have to show you people, what our daily routine is and what normally is for us. My sport is definitely soccer. I'm not very good but I think that's not necessary, the point is that I have fun. I exercise every Tuesday and Thursday. I play a match on Saturday. And as you know, we also have breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our country, The Netherlands, is very small appeared to your country I thought. Also we haven't big mountains like the Mount-Everest, but some small hills only. When I woke up, I change my clothes and then I go for a breakfast, the most important meal of the day I think. If you have a good breakfast, you definitely have a good day. And of course we have school, fun, isn't it? No, you know I'm kidding. But we have got 4 long days and 1 who's very short, I just get sick and tired of it, those long days… I also have the social network apps like you know too, I think. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and what's app, you know what I'm saying. I think it's nice to meet you people and this was a 'short' introduction about who I am.

Peace, drinking water, health care.

Parents that care for you and that you can go to a hospital, also medicins and that you can go to a doctor.

Yes.

If you don’t (a child or a baby), doesnt have clean drinking water or food, you also have infant mortality.

Yes, they do. But we like also once in a while a bit of unhealthy food like McDonalds.

Leaders in a land, actually all people in a country. The government.

Buying vegetables, work out, drinking water.

Our conclusion is that all people do have to eat healthy and drink clean water. The government has to take care for that kind of things.

And then our poem:

Every child has the right to live in peace,

Everything has to be over in one sneeze,

They have to have clean drinking water,

And playing sports with each other.

By Lars, Lynn, Anniek, Inge, Tjerk and Jesse

1. safe home, freedom, good government to protect the people and no war in your country

2. My mobile, money, food and drinks

3. War in your country, unsafe situation

4. They don’t get accepted in the other countries, they life in unsafe situations

5. They are searching for a better life in another country,  jobs and no poverty

6. Their family, government

7. They have right of a place to life, food and shelter

This is our poem;

Is that possible?

A war with freedom

A war without weapons

A war without refugees

Is that possible?

Is there a solution

Maybe a revolution

A revolution over the whole world.

is that possible?

There is one solution

A solution where we feel us safe

The solution is a world without war

Is that possible?

·  What do you need to grow up in a Healthy way? What do you need and who takes care of you when you’re ill?

To live in a Healthy way you need a doctor who helps you with medical problems and you need water and food to stay alive.

You also need parents who love you and take care of you. It’s also important that you’ve got a safe home and no war.

When you’re ill you need a doctor and parents who take care of you. And you need medication to get better.

· Do you also have the right to eat unhealthy but tasty food?

Yes, because every Child in the world deserves unhealthy but tasty because Everyone is equal. Tasty food is the best food.

· What does food and drinking water have to do with infant mortality according to you?

There isn’t enough water for every Child on the world. And a lot of drinking water is contaminated.

That is very dangerous for your Healthy and that’s the reason why a lot of people become sick of it.

If you haven’t much food and water there’s a chance for children to die.

 · Do the children in your environment have enough healthy food?

The children in our environment have enough healthy food. Netherlands is a relatively wealthy country.

There are many places where you can buy healthy food.

· Who should make sure that children can get vaccinated?

Of course the environment. But not everywhere children get vaccinated. Of that reason many charities do this.

Charities like UNICEF protect the children and give them a better life. UNICEF is a worldwide charity.

· What can you do yourself to make sure you’re healthy?

You could eat healthy food and you could sport many times. But it is also important that you don't eat too much fast food.

Keep in mind that eating a little bit of fat isn't quite unhealthy. The solution is: try to eat everything in moderation, and try to manage the calories.

Freedom

Is important

Everybody needs it

Not many have it

Rights

Poem by Jordy, Fenna, Ciara, Tom, Stijn & Inez

Every child has rights,

Everyone must have a safe home with lights.

All people need drinks and food,

Then everyone is in a good mood.

They need a place where it’s safe to walk,

And where it’s safe to talk.

Children deserve freedom,

So they will have a good job and income.

Everybody is the same,

So there shouldn’t be a difference.

Rachel, Lotte, Max.r, Olivier and Thomas ASSIGMENT 2 A POEM:

A home, what does that even mean?

I don't know, I've never seen.

People who're telling me I'm lonely all day,

But what, what do I have to do and in what kind of way?

No one who's next to me,

No one who's helping me.

It's me on my own,

And nobody is going home.

A world like I never saw before,

That's my top priority, I'm sure.

Rachel, Lotte, Max.r, Olivier and Thomas, questions refugees:

"The right to protection and humanitarian assistance. Because a child is vulnerable and has the right to protection and safety".

What do you need to feel safe?

  • A safe house
  • No war
  • No crime
  • Good infrastructure
  • Good parents

Name four things you would take with you if you had to move?

  • Pictures
  • Worthy stuff
  • Pets
  • Clothes

What would be a reason to flee?

  • A war
  • Not a good economic
  • If you have a very bad place to live

What do you know about the refuges in a war?

  • They have no money
  • Family is lost
  • No future
  • They aren't happy

What rights do refugee children have?

  • They have to pick up in a refugee camp
  • The right to drink and eat in our country
  • Probably nothing else, because they don't have much rights the government gave them

What do you know about refugees from poverty?

  • They have, most of the time, a warm heart
  • They have a low budget
  •  They live in little bad places
  • They don't have enough to eat and drink

Who is responsible for the children that have to go to run?

  • The people who are in a war
  • Definitely not the family, but the people who push the and tell them they haven't an another choice

Feedback from: American Language Center, American Councils

Nice to see your contributions on challenge 1. I enjoyed your poems and the truth behind the lines because freedom is not a simple word, and the worst thing about this is that a lot of children through the world can't say it without tears in their eyes. I am glad that you discussed the idea of equality, love, healthy lifestyle, environment and care and solutions to stop war and to provide children all around the world the necessary rights so they would enjoy their happiest moments, their childhood. Greetings , Nica .

Hello everyone, nice to see all your contributions to this challenge. I liked your poems, I think they are great and treated to the topic. I could see that all of you thoroughly disscused all the details based on reflective questions. Besides, I enjoyed your amazing ideas about peace, love, freedom, solutions to stop war and children's rights to enjoy their childhood. Greetings, Catalina.

Our letter (Sanne, Quinty, Merel)

Hi Urmila, we’ve just read your story and we have listened to your video. Imagine how that was for you is something we can’t really do because we don’t know this situation at all. Eating bad food, being a young girl from six years old that cares for a child, also, you were giving away from your parents. Do you look back a lot to that time? Did it hurt when your parents gave you away? We thought it must have been very hard… Why didn’t you just run away from everything, the hard working, being a slave. What kept you staying there, (and what did you all had to do)? You gave a description of your day as a slave but we try to imagine how it really really was. It was painful for you. But, is that still? Or did you like forget it all? Now you’re older, you have your family back so maybe you don’t think of that time anymore. Did you also had some brothers and/or sisters who are also given away when they were young? And were they in the same house, you stayed? Are you still keeping in contact with them? How was it to see your dad after 12 years? Because we can’t miss our dads for such a long time, on that young age. Sorry that we have a lot of questions, but we don’t hear this kind of stories everyday. We want to say for last that you are amazing strong how you dealed with the situation, a lot of respect!

Dear Urmilla Chaudary,

We really respect your story, it’s really sad that this happens in the world. We think you did a great job with joining the Kamalari Girls Forum. And we think that you really help the people who had the same problems as you once had. But we got some questions for you :

Do you speak your parents often? ( have you ever seen them back ? )

Do you blame your parents for what they did to you?

Are you angry at your parents?

Are you angry at your old master?

What is the first thing you did after you left your life behind as Kamalari ?

How long will you proceed being the chairman of the Kamalari Girls Forum ?

We think you should proceed doing this work because you really can make a difference for all the girls that still are a Kamalari and you do a great job taking down the Kamalari system. People shouldn’t be treated like slaves these days anymore and we respect what you have been through and that you could make it out.

Greetings from Niek , Henk and Niels from Holland

Article 28

- It’s an obligation, because a country wants everyone to be able to get a good job when you are older.

- Very important, with the right school you can have a great life.

- How to behave to other children.

- Playing sports, communicating with people.

- How to make money and how to spend it.

- From your parents you learn things like the daily things. What you learn from your friends is how to play with each other.

- Not enough money or the school is too far from home.

Article 31

- For your health and being happy, making friends.

- How to behave to other people and ofcourse the game.

- No, because you don’t want it then.

- Yes, you learn how to fill in your spare time. You also learn from the things you do in your spare time.

- Your parents, school and ofcourse yourself.

Article 32

- It depends on what age you're.

- No, most children are too young for that.

- When they say they are ready for it, and when had enough school in the past. Also when they are like 16 or something.

- Yes, because they have to see when you are working too hard.

- No, you work hard at school to become a person that is educated, not a person that has money, that’s a part of the job.

- It depends on your age and if you’re ready and want to. When you’re old enough it’s good, when you are not than just don’t do that.

- Buildings schools, care that everyone is living close to a school (in the neighbourhood?). Check if every child is going to school. In the Netherlands, when you don’t go to school for a longer time, the police is in front of your door. Actually, that has to be in every country.

Bye, Quinty, Sanne and Merel.

Assignment 2

The shop we have chosen is the Primark.

they sell clothes for almost nothing, so we think that they buy their clothes abroad.

they biggest part of the clothes they sell is bought from China and Cambodia.

on the little cards in the shirt it says where the shirts and other clothes are made.
It is possible that they use child labour to get such cheap clothes.
They probably don’t fight child labour because that’s probably the only reason why they can get the clothes for such little money.

On the website of Primark they say that they check every factory where they place an order. But other sites are claiming that they do use child labour for their clothes.

Bradley, Jasper and Max.H.

Hello Urmila,

We are Max, Thomas and Olivier. We are from the Netherlands and we saw and read your story about what happened in your youth. It was very dreadful to hear and it's unreal to experience it. We have some questions about what you experienced.

How do you feel by the way that your parents had given you away? Do you ever saw your parents again? Or do have  you contact with them? If so, it must be really hard to face it, because it's something nobody wants to experience and imagine it. Was there never been an investigation by the Nepal police about your work as a house slave? It must be very hard that nobody helped you and that the government didn't helped you. We think it's a great idea what you're doing now, because you can help other girls who experience the same thing as you had. You can learn how they have to deal with it and help them in every way you can. We want to know what your answers are at these questions. So we hope to get a response from you,

Goodbye

Hi,

We are Tjerk, Jesse and Lars and we have found a company named Adidas. We were interessed in the amount of children labour they used. We have a lot of products of Adidas, like football shoes, normal shoes and also clothes. Our shoes were made in Vietnam. Pou Yuen factory mades footwear for Nike and Adidas. Our shoes were probably made in the Pou Yuen factory. We saw on the internet, that the people work in poor working conditions and low pay is common. We were surprised that a big company like Adidas, makes their stuff in a factory like Pou Yuen. We think that Adidas must give a good example to the rest of the world, because they are a big company. We didn’t found something about children labour in the Pou Yuen factory.

Article 28

Going to school is a right and an obligation. Why do you think this is?  We are the future. It’s important that we can follow an training, so we get more chances to earn money later.

How important is it to you for every child to be able to go to school? Very important, children have to be children, and have the right to go to school, get a job later and earn money for their families.

What can you learn better in a school than outside of it?  To interact with people, you have much more peers at school. You can learn from each other and from your teacher.

What do you learn as a child from working and having a job?  You learn to work together with people. It’s really important because you need it everywhere.

From who do you learn the most? Your friends, your family, or your teachers? From our families. At our homes we have different ages, you can learn much of every age.

What can be reasons for so many children not going to school? Maybe they have to work, to earn money for their families. It’s too dangerous to go to school and not everywhere is a school in the neighborhood.

Article 31

Why is it important to be able to play? It's important to be able to play because you learn from other children while playing. Also you have fun with friends and you're happy.

What do you learn from playing  From playing you learn a lot. You learn how to interact with each other.

If you don't want to go to football practice,  but still have to go, can you still call it spare time? You play football in your spare time. If you don't like it anymore, you can stop with playing football. Always football practice is your spare time, but when you play it for money it's not your spare time.

Do you also learn things in your spare time? Of course you learn in your spare time. You can learn from your parents, family, friends. But you can also learn from playing and sport in your spare time.

Who should make sure that you have enough spare time?  Mm this is a hard one, we don't know.

Article 32

Do you think you should be able to choose yourself between going to school and working? No, I think that isn't a option. We need school for our future. And we have to work for money.

Does every child have to help his/her parents?  With chores? With earning money? Children have to be children. They don't have to help his/her parents. Maybe by doing the dishes or something, but only this.

When is it good to let children have a job and earn moneyI think children from 14/15 years can do a  paper round. And children from 16 years of older can work in the supermarket or something. The money they earn is of course for themselves.

Does a school have to protect you against working too hard? Yes, they have to. Children are children, they have to have a youth and they don’t have to grow up so fast.

Should you earn money when you work hard at school? Maybe. When they give up earning money for their families, so they can go to school maybe. But at the other side. When you work hard, you probably get (faster) a job whereby you can earn money with.

Are you required to work as a child when your parents don’t make enough money? We’re not. We are children. But I understand, when in countries an alimony doesn’t exist, children start working to support their families. But children aren’t required to work, they have to have education.

Dear Urmila Chaudary,

What a story! We are impressed of it. You have been through a lot and now you do a lot for other kamalari’s. Wonderful!

Did you get education when you were a Kamalari girl? We hardly can imagine that you keep all the other people in the house well, instead of get education. We think that every child has the right to get education , it’s wonderful that you also fight for this. You told that you were six years old when you became a kamalari girl. Did you think much about your family? Were you sad at the beginning because you were not at your own place?

What was it like being away so long? We can imagine that you were lonely, because you had to do all the jobs at that place. Wasn’t it strange when you came back home? When you were home, didn’t it feel weird? Because you probably had to do less.

You’re back home now. You do a lot of things for other people and people think your story is really awful. But, do you still think much of the time you were a kamalari girl?

Again, you do a wonderful job by fighting for other (kamalari) girls’ rights and we hope that you answer our letter!

Assignment 2

The company we used fort his challenge is C&A

C&A is a successful company but it’s not successful in making sure that their clothes aren’t fair. C&A is a Dutch company but they are letting children making their clothes and that’s a very bad thing. The country were the clothes are made is India. In this country the children make the clothes for this company. This is unfair. On the labels they only said were the clothing is made. A few years ago the clothes for C&A were also made in Bangladesh by children. But after a confrontation of child labour in the factories in Bangladesh, C&A broke up the contract with the factories. What the company about child labour says is that they don’t accept child labour. After a confrontation about child labour by publicity, the working environment became better. Now there are strict controls in de factories.

Feedback from: American Language Center, American Councils

Hello, nice to see your work on reflective questions and challenge 2 . The answers to reflective questions were good, and it was great to see the contributions from each person. I liked your research into big companies like Adidas, C&A and Primark. Besides, it's good that you dwelled into such sensitive themes like child labour with responsibility and personal concern. Your letters to Urmila were sympathetic and supportive. I could see that her life story, her damaged childhood  and her genuine  work at her organization impressed all of you and made you thoughtful about this serious problem. Your questions to her were lovely, amicable and considerate. Hope that she will like your amazing work. Greetings, Nica.

Greetings , Nica (American Language Center, American Councils)

How nice to meet you. Can you add some pictures of your group and school too?
We are all curious about your approach of the Children's Rights challenges. Good luck!
