Introduction:

Hi everybody! We are in class XI B at the Economic College in Buzău, Romania, and we are 17 years old. Our school is an amazing place in which we learn the basics of economy. The teachers here are also amazing and they come every day to teach us new things which will help us later on in life.

Our class, well, it’s pretty amazing in its own way. We have good students, but we also have totten side of the apple. Our cooperation isn’t always the best, but we can always work things out. Most of the teachers think of us as a good class, but there are also some who have a different opinion. From the beginning till now we managed to make it together without having any of us leave. Our class teacher helped us a lot by giving us advice whenever she could. In the end our class could be ordinary, but we love it just the way it is.

We study six hours a day, five days a week. The foreign languages that we study are English and French, two classes of each every week. As for us, the GTP team, we are the best at English in our class, we like English a lot. We have usual hobbies, like listening to music, playing sports, using the computer and spending time with friends. We are very interested in taking part in this project as we were part of it last school school year and last semester too.

About our teacher of English we can say that she is a strict, but fair teacher. She likes her job and wants us to be good at English. She loves reading good books and spends a lot of time using the computer and accessing the Internet. Our class teacher teaches us chemistry. She is always calm and loves her students.

From our point of view children’s rights are a set of rules just for the children until they reach adulthood. Since they are rules stated by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, we have to follow them.

Because we are children it means we are also inexperienced. School is the place that shows us the way we will have to talk, work and live when we reach adulthood. Until then we have to follow the set of rules made by the Convention.

These rights are not just for us to follow. The children’s rights protect us from harm and we are grateful for this. They are also made so we won’t be abused by other adults, as children can be too trustworthy and this can lead to bad things.

These rights should be accepted by all the countries and respected by everyone. From our point of view the punishment fro breaking these laws should be severe, depending on the age or the rights people break. We are thankful for these rights and hope they will be respected.

We are all glad that we can take part in this interesting international project.

Contributions Challenge 1:

From our point of view we are the happiest when we are together with our family and friends. A home is the place where your loved ones are waiting for you with a roof above your head. We think that food, clothes and some entertainment possibilities are the minimum requirements for a person to live. Other things like TV or a mobile phone are also needs, but they aren’t a necessity. In our opinion our parents should be the ones who take care of us. If they can’t, our grandparents or someone else from the family should. We’d like to have the right to everything good that we ever wanted or like. Our parents always tell us that the best reward for them is for us to focus on schoolwork, even if it isn’t much from our point of view.

The best way to grow healthy is by eating balanced meals and at least a fruit a day. When we are ill, most of the times our mom takes care of us by giving us some medicine, but if it’s serious we go  to a hospital. McDonald’s and KFC are producers of unhealthy foods, but their taste is so good that it’s hard to stop eating them. From our point of view an infant has to be taken care of with close attention, because they are a fragile part of parents’lives. We think that everyone in our vicinity has healthy food, but not all choose to eat it. Family doctors should make sure children get vaccinated, but it is also their parents’duty. For us eating healthy isn’t enough, exercising is also needed.

We feel pretty safe because of the police which are protecting us. For us the most important things we need to take with us are: mobile phones, laptops, computers, pictures with friends and a book to read on the way. The biggest reason to flee is war or crime expansion in teh city. We don’t know a lot about war refugees other than the possibility that they lost their homes. We know nothing about refugees from poverty and there aren’t any refugees in our town or area. We think that the one responsible for making children run is terrorism. Refugee children should have most of the rights normal children have, with a few exceptions like citizenship.

Assignment 2 - A poem

This is a poem that we made about children that suffer and can’t enjoy their childhood.

Children Suffer

Children want a good life,

A peaceful life.

They want a normal life,

The life of their dreams.

But they cry and sob

For our help to come,

And it doesn’t come

Because we don’t know to help.

We should do it,

We should help suffering children,

Because they deserve the chance,

The chance of a new life.

Let’s bring them happiness

From all our heart

Because they want a good life,

Their own life.

That’s all we had to say

And we hope we’ve convinced you

To fulfill their dreams,

The dreams of their souls.

Assignment 3 - Make a cartoon

In our cartoon bombs are falling over houses and children cry.

Contributions Challenge 2:

Article 28

We think that going to school is beneficial. We should profit from the opportunity and be happy because we have that possibility. If we think of the children who don’t go to school, we can consider ourselves lucky.

For us it is important that every child should be able to go to school. We think that school is an important thing in our lives because in school we can learn a lot of things that we can’t learn outside of it. For example, we learn how to write, read, make a project and work together. It is also true that outside of school families offer us education: we learn to respect people, what friendship is.

When we are children we can learn from working and having a summer job that it’s hard to be an adult, have responsibilities and work every day, and we can also learn some things from all the people from our lives.

However, we think that we can learn most from our teachers, because they teach us a few years, they teach us new things every school year, they have more studies and experience than us. We think that the reason for so many children not going to school is their lack of possibilities.

Article 31

We think that it is important to be able to play because by playing we can relax and free our minds and this helps our body development. From playing we can learn to enjoy every little thing. Forget about problems and learn that a day out with our friends is more important that a day we spend in the house, using our phones or computers. We think that if we don’t want to go to football practice, but still have to go, it isn’t spare time. In your spare time you what you like and what relaxes you.

We also learn things in our spare time. We can learn a new sport like tennis, basketball or something else, by reading a book we can develop our imagination and improve our reading skills, we can also learn new things by watching documentaries, a new language, just by watching some films or serials.

Of course, we think that parents should make sure that we have enough spare time for ourselves. Parents should make a timetable to be sure that we have enough spare time.

Article 32

We think we should be able to choose between going to school and working because we have the right to.

We also think that every child has to help his parents with the chores, but they should be easy ones. They should earn money just for hard work.

We think that it is good to let children have a summer or part-time a job, because they gain experience for when they are adults and earn money for themselves.

School has to protect us against working too hard because this could damage our health. We also think that we should be rewarded for our good grades.

In Romania we are not required to work when we are children when our parents don’t make enough money, it is their duty to work, but we know that in other countries this is not a choice.

We should hace an international project to stop child labour in which there should be a salary growth of the parents. The laws which don’t let children to have a job until they are 16 years old should be applied in all the countries.

Assignment 3 – A letter to Urmila

Dear Urmila,

We can say that we are your fans. We discovered your stoty at school in this GTP project and we were so impressed that we searched for your whole story.

We consider you a very strong person, you are a fighter and you have a great personality. You made sacrifices to achieve your goals and make your dreams come true.

We can’t believe what we had to go through. We respect you very much for your work with the organization and for your courage to resist as Kamalari for so long. We are truly happy that you succeeded to get free and get your own life and we appreciate you and your life.

We wish to have the chance to meet you one day and talk to you about all the sacrifices that you made to help yourself and others. We’d like to help people as you do.

Your friends from Romania,

Colegiul Economic Buzau Team

Assignment 4 – No education for children in refugee camps?

Amid the Syrian chaos of carnage, there is a tiny glimmer of hope. Without education, Syria’s children will be a lost generation. They are forced to work to support their families. For reasons of time, these children choose rather to work than go to school. Some are afraid of war, so they search for shelter in various camps or territories, even where it takes work to live.

But there are different nonprofit organizations that deal with the education of refugee children. These organizations offer various courses for good professional training and a great moral support.

We personally feel sorry for these children and we would like to be part of such organizations to help them.

Completion:

Dear jury,

This project was different from the cycles from last year, as this year we worked on a variety of themes and so we found out about the problems of children without education and the circumstances of their lives. This motivated us to do something to help them.

We all could help children have a good education. For example, for children from Syria who are refugees and are forced to work to support themselves and their families.

We could donate a sum of money every month for these children so that they have a chance to attend school.

Another way we could help them is to organize a fundraising foe special education centres.

We think that school is very important and it helps you to create your own future.

Hope to meet in another GTP cycle,

Team from Colegiul Economic Buzau, Romania

Evaluation:

We liked this GTP cycle, we studied and found out more detailed information about children’s rights, but we were a bit surprised by the kind of tasks and their variety. We hope to do better next time.
